After several weeks of painstaking work, my weevil costume is done!!! I made it for a parade where our uni’s entomology club participated in, which was a lot of fun! The colors are based on Eupholus magnificus.

The build is made put of cardboard and masking tape. I covered the top stripe, eyes, and underside of the head with mesh, so visibility and breathability is pretty fantastic. The antennae are adjustable too! The head is attached to the thorax with a velcro strip.

The extra arms are attached with fishing line and velcro to the top gloves. Definitely a challenge to figure out, one of the arms unfortunately snapped off during parading :(

Overall, I’m incredibly pleased with how the costume turned out, it’s been a while since having a cool project to work on!

what made you choose a deer for your fursona?

It's a long story that I am all too happy to tell!

I first attended Midwest Furfest in 2018, after years of being curious about it. My boyfriend at the time was a member of the Neo-Futurists Theater, and the Neo's had a longstanding relationship with the MFF community. They perform their flagship show (Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, later rebranded as The Infinite Whale) there every year, and when the theater company's former founder attempted to steal their show name/copyright following his ousting due to sexual assault allegations, MFF really came through to offer considerable moral support.

There was lots of goodhearted joking about the furry community within that theater space, and I'd always been curious about furries and a supporter of them in heart if not in fact, and so I finally decided one year to tag along, see my boyfriend performing there, and walk around the convention floor and visit the dealer's den during my down time.

I absolutely LOVED IT. I was completely blown away by the artistry of the suits and the playful spirit of the suiters. I ran into a few friends there, outing them as furries to me, and we grew closer. I also took notice of some teal, sparkly resin antlers while I was in the Dealer's Den:

I snapped those things up and put them on immediately. Some stranger started to pet me right away (which is technically a convention consent violation, and should *not* be done, but I personally was the opposite of troubled by being treated in this way) and I was hooked.

I had always had a "thing" for antlers and horns since playing the PS2 game Ico back in the early 2000's. The young male protagonists horns representing an unwanted appendage and a visible "curse" was very appealing to me... as a boy who had been saddled with two very unwanted appendages of my own. (trangsender). I also have had many very magical encounters with deer in Ohio and Pennsylvania where I grew up. As a skiddish bottomy freak whose caused a lot of car accidents, a prey animal that also has the power to kill people in vehicles seemed plenty apt. So when I found some antlers to wear, it seemed like a natural enough fit for a potential fursona.

Then my friend @jettvector designed my fursona, using the teal antlers as a jumping off point. (this art has his old watermark on it, but he goes by jettvector now. commission him!):

Now that I had a friend-assigned fursona and was officially a furry, I ran with it, and began commissioning some art that further refined my image of the character:

A few things that I love about my sona's design: I love that his ears are big and really stick out, as my ears do the same, I love that he has a spot reflecting my monroe piercing, I love that deers are spotted in general, which can allow me to recast my own bacne scars in a more positive light, and i love that his greenish teal skin reflects my own olive complection (which I used to get a lot of weird comments about as a kid and felt self conscious about).

I also accumulated some gear in the meantime that allowed me to better embody my deersona, who I now call DD (which stands for Deer Devon, Docile Deer, Devon Dawn, my former DD tits, or any numer of potential things haha)

Yep! Most shapeshifter therians I've found have little to no control over their shifts tho, which isn't me at all. I can control it for the most part, but when I'm stressed I'm more likely to shift cat or deer ears. Oh, and only phantom shifts. Usually I'll get some combination of a cat tail (tho I once got a nice slappy fish tail!), deer or cat ears, deer antlers, cat paws, and bird wings (usually high speed or hovering type!). All of it varies a lot from time to time, tho. Oh! And claws or sharpened fingertips!

4/ How do you experience your alterhumanity in everyday life?

Eh, it depends a lot on the day, so it's hard to say? Lots of annoyance at not having expressive ears tho.

Close Enough got the release date of July 9...A day before my birthday,I think the title of the show already speaks for itself.But I need to do a bit more than that for this so let’s see what this show is supposed to be about and details that stick out in the poster for the show.

I never played any traditional sports like soccer or baseball or anything. I did take gymnastics for a while as a kid, but while I had fun with the low-level stuff I never really got good at anything beyond that, and when my little sister joined and very quickly surpassed me, well...I lost interest.

I did marching band/indoor drumline throughout high school if that counts though. I also took Aikido for a few years, which I actually quite enjoyed; mostly only stopped because my schedule was getting too stressful and I had to let a few activities go. I might take it up again someday though.

Career-wise, I’d like to be a character animator. Technically I’m already an animator at a small game studio but we mostly do stuff like cycles and idles; not much acting or story involved, which is what I’d really like to work with. Life-wise, though, if circumstances permit I’d rather stay home to look after my (future) kids and do some freelance art on the side. I think that’s more important than making characters move.

Montague Arnett: Day 2 Complex Rules

Complexes, in the simplest words, are existential limitations that reflect the psychological worldview of their afflicted. As such, understanding the Complex innately leads to a greater understanding of the character themselves. As the central character of the novel, Montague has perhaps the most complex Complex of them all. Montague's highly dependent personality manifests itself in a fiery passion that drives him to show his inherent, unassisted worth. At his core, his deep fear of loneliness makes him incapable of accepting any form of abandonment, either physical or emotional.  Montague's Complex manifests itself in a variety of ways over the course of the narrative, though always following the same essential rules. The trigger for his nonexistence is always solitude, though whether he is aware of an unseen perceiver or not is irrelevant. Complexes may be inherently tied to the mind of the afflicted, but also affect and are affected by the minds of others through a subconscious symbiotic social connection. Montague is also consciously aware of the existence of his Complex, and the fear of its symptoms are as debilitating as the symptoms themselves. Regardless if he were to come to any emotional harm from standing alone in a room for a few minutes, Montague will pathologically avoid such situations. Nonexistence is not discomforting for him, as his conscious thoughts simply cease, then resume upon renewed observation, rather like the pause button on a remote. His subconscious brain continues to function though, beating blood, breathing air, and unless caught in a precarious pose, maintaining balance as well. His body will continue to function even if left unconscious for an extended amount of time, rather like a coma, only facing failure in the face of starvation and dehydration.

 The exact semantics of what constitutes "observation" is the most fascinating facet of his Complex's operation, both to characters within the story, such as the constantly curious Tamara, and also to myself, because I honestly have no clue. The variety of situations which test the parameters of the condition make for fascinating thought experiments (a sentiment also shared by Tamara, who is willing to turn my thought experiments into literal experiments, no matter how demeaning). Not all 5 senses trigger existence for Montague. 

Sight obviously does, but also contains many caveats which will be explored in more detail. 

Sound can trigger existence, but its lack of continuous nature makes it extremely unreliable. Though if he enters an empty room shouting and is heard, he will exist, it only takes the pause between words or a gasp of breath to undo the observation. 

Smell is entirely unreliable as well. Not only are humans barely incapable of distinguishing by smell, not many smells are "inherent" to a person. A strong perfume Montague wears is NOT Montague himself, while body odor is the result of bacteria living on his skin. Without an essential smell, Montague is unobservable even to a person with a particularly keen nose. 

Touch and physical contact are extremely reliable forms of observation, though they also have caveats. While touching through clothing does trigger existence, touching the clothing without touching Montague himself does not. Similarly, what is being touched must be presently connected to his corporeal form. For example, grasping cut hair does not equal touching Montague himself. 

Finally, Taste……… unfortunately counts on a technicality. While drinking blood or sweat or other bodily excretions is entirely ineffective, making physical contact via licking, say…… his foot (what'd you think I was going to say?) TECHNICALLY counts as observance due to the rules regarding touch. Not that this will ever practically come up in any shape or form during the narrative because none of my characters are that nasty (though Tamara still insists on testing it just to make sure.)

 Of course, even with these rules in place, there is still many specific situations where the parameters can be challenged, especially regarding the seemingly straightforward rules of "sight". So here's a quick Q and A running through as many as possible!

 Does he stop existing when the observer is blinking? (yes, but only momentarily, barely enough for him to recognize). 

If you don't see him directly but out of the corner of your eye, does he exist? (yes again! Even if just in close proximity to him, he will continue to exist as long as you don't specifically turn your back on him).

How well do you have to see him- I.E fogged up glasses or long distances? (It ultimately depends if you are able to still distinguish who he is. If he's merely a shadow of a something in your vision, that is not enough). 

What about if he's fully concealed, as if under a blanket, but you can still see his outline without seeing him directly? (No. Seeing a "human shape" still leaves doubt to whether it could be a mannequin of something of the sort.). 

What about if he is in clothes that fully conceal the body, such as a mascot costume or a fursuit? (This one's tough because he's still recognizably human, but he himself is not visible, just the costume. I may have erred on the sight of this answer because imagining him being stuffed into a fursuit as a form of torture is just too funny).

What if the observation is through a mirror? (yep! 100%).

What if it's through a livestream video? (this one's tough again because it's a continual form of observation, but is he being observed or just pixels that resemble him? Is the idea of Montague enough to communicate his existence? Unsure bout this one actually)

What if it's through a video that was recorded remotely than watched later? (Probably not. It’s a lil bit complicated because if it did work, he could exist at any time just as long as he filmed himself and someone in the entire of the future watched it at some point. On the other hand, if it doesn't work, then this allows him to be observed while not being observed- a paradoxical statement that undermines the absolute nature of the Complex).

So yeah, Montague's Complex is very compl…icated. But the thought experiment is one of the most appealing parts of the character, and writing the novel as a whole. If anyone has any more questions about how Montague's complex would react in a specific situation, I'd love to hear it! It'd actually help a lot, just so I have answers to any hypothetical questions future dude-bro fans want to try and trip me up with to prove their intellectual superiority.

Atlantale Ask Meme

Since Atlantale is only 10 days away, I decided to fill out this little questionaire!

Arrival and Departure:

I’ll be arriving in Atlanta Friday evening and leaving Sunday some time before noon.

Staying At:

An uncle’s house! (I mean, he’s not an uncle by blood, he was married to my dad’s sister, but now they’re not married anymore, so he’s not technically an uncle... but we still like him and he’s cool. ^,^)

How are you traveling?

Flying! (No way I’m driving 10+ hours for a single-day convention, even if it is for Undertale. XD)

Where will you be? How best to find you?

I will try to be at the event as early as I possibly can. Because registration opens at 11 and the party doesn’t truly start until 12, I’ll likely just be wandering around the building or the entrance until then. Once the event kicks off, I’ll likely be wandering around the art tables and trying to get pictures with all the cosplayers. XD

Look for the Frisk with a pink headband and a Pink Flowey wrapped around their arm. That’s me! I’m also thinking about pinning Pink Temmie to my shoulder with a safety pin to make me stand out more (plus that would be sUcH a cUtE!)

Who will you be with?

I'm going to Atlantale all on my lonesome, which I’m a little nervous about because I don’t usually go on adventures by myself! Usually I have my twin sister or my boyfriend to experience things with... but I want to do this on my own precisely because I don’t often get the opportunity to do things on my own.

It’ll be exciting for me and force me out of my typical shyness, helping me to grow and make my own friends who are as passionate about Undertale as I am. ^_^

I think I’m pretty nice. Depending on my mood I’ll probably be A) friendly and outgoing or B) shy and reserved. If I’m stressed or nervous, I’ll probably be mood B, but if things are going smooth and well, I’ll be mood A. (Hope this makes sense!)

Are you cliquey?

I never went to highschool (being homeschooled), so I don’t think it would be in me to be “cliquey”. I want to talk to everyone! The artists, the cosplayers... the casuals, the hardcores... I don’t think a fan event for Undertale would really have cliques, would they? :P

I won’t know anyone there anyway, so it will be impossible for me to be cliquey! Unless I keep to myself and make up a clique all on my own... but I don’t think I’ll do that. XD

I don’t think you’ll be able to purchase food at the event. Maybe they’ll have water or something? I looked online at maps, and it seems there’s going to be a couple good restaurants to get lunch/dinner at somewhat nearby.

I mean, I probably won’t let you buy me anything, but if a whole group of my newly made friends wanted to go out together for dinner or something, then I’m down!

FLUFF, ANGST, OR SMUT: Mostly just fluff. Smut is fairly new for me to write but so far it's...a lot of fun lol

I..can do angst, but it's really hard for me. I get a lot of anxiety when things go wrong and I can't make it better. So, a bit is fine. People grow through conflict. But too much is too much. I just cannot handle miserable muses.

PLOTS OR MEMES: It is SO much fun to unravel a plot from just a simple meme. Honestly no ones ever actively plotted with me? So, I guess I'm more of a meme/wing it person.

LONG OR SHORT REPLIES: I need a fine balance. I only have on partner I'll write more than three paragraphs for. But I lose interest/wiriting ability if an rp is too short... so I think like two-three paragraphs is best for me. Not too much work, but enough to stay interesting?

so I scanned through the twokinds tag on here because I started reading it recently and wanted to see if there was anything rebloggable (very little that wasn't yiff, which I'm not into or going to blog about), and at some point I saw a post where a person was ranting about how it was shitty because it was a "borderline mediocre furry webcomic with racist undertones and a shitty self-insert". I'm just like, first of all fuck you for being a quality control elitist. order of the stick, xkcd, cyanide & happiness, chainmail bikini, homestuck, they all look like absolute shit in the first pages if you compare to watchmen or death note or whatever. they're webcomics, not fine art. the important part of webcomics is the story, the writing, and the art style. it doesn't have to be monet or van gogh and it's just shitty to criticize other people's work without giving any constructive feedback whatsoever, and just snipe from the veil of anonymity. next, as for the "racist undertones". tom is korean and he was bullied by racist white assholes in school which inspired him to make a webcomic that explored racism- which he explains on his website. just because a piece of media discusses racism or shows racism occurring, that doesn't mean that it automatically glorifies or even condones the behavior. twokinds shows that racism is bad, of course it will have racist characters, you idiot. tom isn't a racist just because he talks about it. as for the self-insert, that's just reaching. if that were true, tolkien has a shitty self insert in the form of bilbo motherfucking baggins. "I am a hobbit in all but name". original works, being an extension of their creator's minds, will ALWAYS have pieces of the author in the main character. and the side characters. & literally every single one of the characters. you're just being a dick for no reason other than to be a dick, grasping at straws because you're pissed off about the popularity of a furry webcomic, as if that was even a bad thing in the first place. furries just have an interest in anthropomorphic animals, whether it's sexual or otherwise. even if they were yiffers, who fucking cares? anthro furries are basically humans with excess body fur and differently shaped faces. it's literally no different than wanting to fuck vulcans, romulans, asari, quarians, turians, time lords, angels, demons, elves, dwarves, twi'leks, togruta, dathomirians, it's all the same. not humans, but still have the intelligence of a human and therefore can offer consent for sex and by extension isn't any of your fucking business. and regardless of that, even if it was morally vehement to want to fuck anthro animals, not all furries are yiffers in the first place. some, perhaps even most, furries just enjoy things like sly cooper, banjo kazooie, starfox, teenage mutant ninja turtles, spyro the dragon, ratchet & clank, elder scrolls, and other things that have anthropomorphic animals on the character roster. so yeah, by technicality, I'm a furry. it doesn't mean I'm gonna buy a fursuit and have an orgy in the woods, you know why? because that's not what furries are. there isn't a single goddamn thing wrong with anything that tom has been doing in the past decade (more than that, actually), and it's complete and utter bullshit to talk shit about him when you haven't done anything with your life besides take part in mutual misery with random strangers online and complain about how someone with a little more artistic talent than you is famous for their effort. and also twokinds has a canonically gay trans male character whose demographic doesn't exclusively determine his story arc so there's that too. bottom line, twokinds may not be the Greatest Series In The History Of Forever™ but it really doesn't have to be such to be enjoyable and worth reading.
